Passenger says he took substances before Fiji flight disturbance
Nathan Patrick Young went to federal court Tuesday to plead guilty to interfering with Fiji Airways flight attendants and crew members, agree that he owes the airline $22,128 and get sentenced, possibly to probation. His father and uncle had traveled from Young’s native Australia to attend the court hearing.
When it came time for Young, 24, to admit to what he did, he told U.S. District Judge Leslie E. Kobayashi that before boarding flight 811 in Los Angeles on May 26, he took some substances that mixed up his memory but that he accepts responsibility for his actions.
That wasn’t good enough for Kobayashi, who recited the government’s account in detail, even repeating the profanity used, then asked Young whether he agreed with her recitation. When Young said he didn’t remember but didn’t dispute the government’s account, Kobayashi told him, “If you don’t agree with it ...

Memos name ?button pusher?
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has “inadvertently” released the name of the so-called button pusher, the man who sent a false ballistic missile alert Jan. 13 that plunged Hawaii residents and visitors into 38 minutes of uncertainty.
More than five months after public-records requests were made, HI-EMA sent six media organizations, including the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the name of the button pusher in a batch of emails Tuesday. The emails from Maj. Gen. Arthur “Joe” Logan, state adjutant general, former HI-EMA Administrator Maj. Gen. Vern Miyagi and former Executive Officer Toby Clairmont were heavily redacted by HI-EMA, the Department of Defense and the state Attorney General’s Office.
In the more than 300 pages of emails, several entire entries were blacked out, and some contained missing sender or receiver identification. However, redactors failed to delete Scott Harrison, the name of the employee they blamed f ...

Migrant kids could end up in already strained foster system
Foster care advocates say the government won’t likely be able to reunite thousands of children separated from parents who crossed the border illegally, and some will end up in an American foster care system that is stacked against Latinos and other minorities.
With few Spanish-speaking caseworkers, it’s a challenge tracking down family members of the children who live south of the U.S.-Mexico border, and other relatives living in the states might be afraid to step forward to claim them because of fears of being detained or deported themselves.
Many complications have arisen for these separated families since the Trump administration adopted its “zero-tolerance” policy on entering the country illegally. As many as 2,300 children have been taken from their migrant parents at the border and long-term treatment of them is a concern.
“Because they are Latino and because their relatives are liv ...
