Shaun White looking like the top dog, not an underdog
Bongpyeong-myeon, South Korea — Whoops. Let’s rethink this Shaun White underdog thing.
Last month, a snowboarding expert suggested the greatest halfpipe rider in history had lost his golden touch.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist answered Tuesday at Phoenix Snow Park by throwing down a run of 98.50 points out of 100 to earn the top qualifying spot heading into the final.
“I get my favorite spot dropping last,” White told a handful of reporters. “It’s a good luck spot: I really wanted it.”
White, 31, will face a highly spirited group of younger riders in what could be a barnburner of a final Wednesday.
Scotty James of Australia qualified second with 96.85 points, pre-Olympic favorite Ayumu Hirano of Japan was third with 95.25 points. American Ben Ferguson (91.00 points) was fourth.
“Being here and being the guy at his fourth Olympics, I never felt l ...

American Anderson wins slopestyle, Canada gets skating gold
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea ? Canada skated to the gold it had been dreaming about for four years.
American Jamie Anderson got another to match the one she won in Sochi.
The Canadians kicked off the third day of full competition at the Pyeongchang Olympics on Monday by winning the team figure skating competition, finishing with the medal they had set their sights on since taking silver in 2014. And, they clinched it before the ice dance ? the third event of the day ? even began.
?We think we?re the best in the world,? ice dancer Scott Muir said. ?Winning this is like winning hockey and winning curling.?
The Canadians won the men?s moguls title for the third consecutive Olympics, with six-time world champion Mikael Kingsbury filling the only hole in his resume.
In other night finals, Ireen Wust won her fifth Olympic title and the Dutch speedskaters picked up gold and bronze in the 1,500 meters, biathlon No. 1 Martin F ...

Pool records fall on senior day as Stanford crushes Cal
STANFORD — For anyone aiming to dethrone top-ranked Stanford in the pool, best of luck.
It took 19 years to regain a spot atop the podium since its previous national title in 1998, and the Cardinal doesn’t intend to relinquish its status as NCAA champion in women’s swimming and diving.
That’s why Stanford coach Greg Meehan feels confident the best is yet to come next month at Ohio State.
“I think the way we structure our season is we allow it to build,” said Meehan, in his sixth season on The Farm. “I don’t think we ever hit our peak until it really matters, and for us that’s in Columbus. And we’re just kind of working backwards from NCAAs and then Pac-12s and here and just a couple of weeks ago.
“So we’re just trying to continue to build the momentum, but at the end of the day our eyes are focused on Columbus.”
Speaking of momentum, how do ...

Two arrested in San Ramon grocery store robbery
San Ramon police recovered over $10,000 worth of over-the-counter medicines stolen Feb. 12, 2018, from a grocery store.
SAN RAMON — A store employee’s quick call to alert police led to two arrests and the recovery of more than $10,000 in over-the-counter medicines, authorities said Monday.
The call from a worker at a Safeway store alerted police that two suspects had taken the medicine before driving away in a silver Hyundai with paper plates, police said Monday night.
Swing-shift officers patrolling near the store found and stopped the car minutes later, recovering the medicines. A search of the Hyundai also yielded about $2,000 in stolen goods from local retailers.
The suspects were arrested on suspicion of robbery and taken to Martinez county jail, police said.

Cardinals extend GM Keim?s contract through 2022
TEMPE ? The Arizona Cardinals have extended the contract of general manager Steve Keim through 2022.
Keim is a 19-year employee of the Cardinals, starting as a college scout in 1999. He worked his way up through the ranks to be hired as general manager on Jan. 8, 2013, just in time to help team president Michael Bidwill interview and hire Bruce Arians as head coach.
In the five-year Keim-Arians era, the Cardinals went 49-30-1 in the regular season.
Bidwill said in a statement released by the club that the achievements speak for themselves and the extension ensures that Keim ?will continue to shape our success going forward.?
Arians retired after last season, and Keim and Bidwill led the search that led to the hiring of Steve Wilks, the Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator, as the new head coach.
Now Keim?s focus is on quarterbacks. There aren?t any on the Arizona roster.

Warriors? Steve Kerr allows players to coach themselves in win over Suns

OAKLAND – Even as he has shattered coaching records, Warriors Steve Kerr has always maintained his success stems from having talented players.
Without any prompting, Kerr then offered up an example. The Warriors did not just secure a 129-83 win over the Phoenix Suns because of their superior talent. The Warriors won partly because they coached themselves.
Kerr’s experiment all started as the Warriors trailed, 13-8, with 6:58 left in the first quarter. During a timeout, Kerr handed his clipboard to Warriors veteran reserve Andre Iguodala. Iguodala then led the huddle and drew up a play, while Kerr and his assistants stood off to the side.
Soon enough, the most compelling drama did not involve Stephen Curry nearly post a triple double with 22 points, nine rebounds or seven assists before sitting in the four ...
